Neville Reyner CBE DL

Chairman, Groundwork East

It seems clear that over the coming years, ongoing austerity is likely to drive increased levels of poverty and further reductions in the scope and quality of services and facilities in local communities. This makes Groundwork East’s mission to transform lives in the most disadvantaged local areas all the more pressing and we are very well positioned to respond to that increasing need. We look forward to working alongside partners old and new to develop yet further innovative solutions to the complex challenges which our communities face.

As ever, I would like to thank our many partners, funders, stakeholders, Directors, volunteers, and our exceptional staff team for all they do to make such a significant and lasting difference within the communities we serve. I would also like to thank Steve Harvey for his outstanding service to Groundwork in the role of Executive Director since 2004.

Steve Harvey Executive Director, Groundwork East

I have absolutely loved my time at Groundwork.
I am proud of what we have done to support local communities and of our reputation as a trusted and skilled partner of high integrity. More than anything I am so proud of the superb team we have built. My colleagues, past and present, have done and continue to do an outstanding job, often in tough circumstances. Given the turmoil in the UK just now Groundwork has never been more needed. At a time when so many people have so many opinions about our communities: their problems, what they need, what they don’t need - Groundwork colleagues are out every day working alongside communities to change places and lives in real and practical ways. It has been a privilege to have been part of that positive force for good and I hope this publication conveys the tangible impact of our efforts across the east of England.

Leading Groundwork East is a great job and I wish the new Executive Director James Newell every success.

In 2019/20 the Trust will recruit a new Executive Director following my retirement at the end of June 2019 after 15 fantastic years.

Welcome to our 2019 Impact Report. Through stories told by our volunteers, beneficiaries and partners this publication sets out highlights of the projects delivered in 2018/19, illustrating the impact Groundwork East made by positively changing places and changing lives throughout Cambridgeshire & Peterborough, Essex, Hertfordshire, Luton & Bedfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.
